This is THE QUESTION I get the most in my DMs: ‘How did I grow thousands of targeted Instagram followers in a such short amount of time?’ It is not an easy road, as it involves a lot of work and motivation, however, the reward of having an engaged community is simply amazing, and can definitely convert into a lot of sales!
How to grow your Instagram followers?
First, let’s be clear when we are talking about followers, we mean TARGETED followers. What does this mean? These are essentially people who are actually interested in your business model, niche, and/or content and will definitely interact with your account!
Because having 10k followers for 30 likes per picture we will definitely pass!
Engaged followers on Instagram are the Holy Grail because they generally convert into loyal customers totally ready to BUY from you! So it might take more time, but if you are planning to grow your audience to monetize it later on (or right now) you may want to focus on this (little) detail straight away.
Here are the 5 important steps that helped me grow a massive audience on Instagram:
1. Pick your specific niche
On Instagram, I see many businesses focusing on too many things with the goal to convert the maximum amount of people. WRONG! The more specific you are, the higher chance you will have to convert targeted followers that will actually care about your content.
You’re a business coach? What is your speciality?
You’re a social media manager? What industry are you focusing on?
You’re a jewellery shop? What is the style of your jewellery?
By doing so, you will create really specific content that will answer the needs of a certain audience, which will give you more chance to show up as an expert in your niche and ultimately stand out from the crowd.
Take me for example, there are many business coaches out there, but how many business coaches specialising in digital products or female-led businesses? This is how you narrow down your niche and differentiate yourself on the platform.
2. Get under the skin of your target audience
So many entrepreneurs and businesses fail to understand what their target audience needs, and how they should provide them with amazing resources that will convert them into loyal and engaged followers.
This step is crucial to grow the right type of followers. You need to sit down and ask yourself these questions: Who is my ideal follower? What is their gender? Their age? Their job? What are their struggles? What make them happy? Why do they need me?
Once you’ve gone through these questions you would have built a clear profile of your « ideal » follower. Keep these answers near you at all times, so you can always link back your content, your tone of voice and visuals to this « ideal » follower.
3. Show up consistently
I can’t stress this enough but consistency is definitely key for any kind of growth. By posting high-quality content 5 times a week on any social media platform, I can promise you, you will grow massively in a very short amount of time.
Then, you will ask me “why doesn’t everyone have 10k followers then?” It’s simply because it requires a lot of effort and motivation to stay consistent and unfortunately not everybody can commit to it!
Showing up doesn’t mean by only posting on your feed, but also engaging with your current followers in comments, on their account, or posting stories, reels, lives and IGTVs.
You just want to make sure you stay active as much as you can on the platform, so Instagram can push your posts and content forward.
4. Create high-quality and valuable content
Instagram, as with the other social media platforms, is all about content creation. To convert viewers into actual followers you want to make sure you are providing some kind of value. It can be educational, inspirational, entertaining etc. but it needs to be something your «ideal » followers can learn from or relate to easily.
Same for your visuals. Instagram is a visual platform, it is almost impossible to get attracted by the content without checking out the picture. That’s why you need to pay great attention to your visuals, whether you are producing pictures or graphics, you want to make sure the format is fitting Instagram guidelines, the pictures are not pixelated or blurry, and you choose colours your followers may respond to.
A good content strategy is literally 50% of your growth. You nail that, you nail your growth.
5. Engage with your community… Genuinely
You want growth and engagement? Well sorry to break it to you but you need to give back at some point!
The more interactive you are with your community, the easier it will be for you to grow. Your followers will turn into fans and will want to re-share your content, save it or talk about it (free marketing, #YESWEWANT).
I generally advise spending 15 minutes engaging daily. It can be by replying to your comments or DMs, or checking your followers’ accounts and liking/saving their posts. Show some appreciation by actually re-sharing their posts into your own stories.
There are plenty of ways to do it, but you want to do it consistently so you can see real effects on your growth and start getting more and more engagement under your posts.
